The Writing Coach's Role
The Writing Coach's role is to help a Senior Project student complete his/her research-based argumentative paper. The student is responsible for finding a Waipahu High School faculty member to serve as his/her Writing Coach. After a faculty member agrees to be the student's Writing Coach, both the student and the Writing Coach complete and sign a "Student and Writing Coach Agreement" form which describes the responsibilities of both parties. The Writing Coach is required to reserve one Student Learning Time per week to work with their Senior Project student(s).

• A Writing Coach must be a full-time, permanent faculty member of Waipahu High School
• The Writing Coach does not need to be an English Teacher
• The Writing Coach must be available to meet regularly with the Senior Project student, at least once a week, during
Student Learning Time to help him/her complete the Argumentative Paper
• The Writing Coach will need to help the student revise his/her paper until it meets or exceeds the minimum
requirements for a quality argumentative paper
NOTE: Training sessions will be provided for faculty members agreeing to serve as Writing Coaches
• The Writing Coach does not need to be an English Teacher
• The Writing Coach must be available to meet regularly with the Senior Project student, at least once a week, during

Writing coach's responsibilities
• Provide instructional support for students completing the Argumentative Paper component of the Senior Project
• Writing Coaches will decide how many students they are willing to work with; however, they are recommended to
limit themselves to no more that 4 or 5 students at a time.
• Establish a regular meeting time and location for the student to receive needed help and instruction
• Establish a timetable for paper development which includes at least one Writing Coach evaluation of the student's
final draft (using the Argumentative Paper grading rubric)
• Based on the Writing Coach's latest evaluation of the student's argumentative paper, the Writing Coach will
complete and sign an "Argumentative Paper Checklist" and provide a copy for the student to attach to his/her final
draft for faculty grading purposes.
NOTE: Student's final draft evaluation by the Writing Coach should not have any scores of 2 or less on any rubric items. If a student receives a score of "1" on any the assessment items, the paper will not proceed to faculty grading.

• Students are expected to meet regularly with their Writing Coaches and keep to the timelines established by
Writing Coaches to provide enough time for Writing Coaches grading of students' final drafts
• Students should notify Writing Coaches, ahead of time, if they will be unable to keep a scheduled appointment
• Students are expected to follow their Writing Coach's instructions and revision suggestions in order to complete a
quality product. In other words, don't waste a Writing Coach's time by not making the changes or revision
suggestions they provide.
NOTE: Any final drafts receiving a "1" on any items of the grading rubric, during the Writing Coach's evaluation, will not go on to faculty final grading. Likewise, if a final draft receives a "1" on any assessment items during faculty grading, the student will not be allowed to revise his/her argumentative paper.
